Solar Plexus Chakra: Our Power House

Updated: Mar 4, 2022

A Continuing look at our main chakras

Our third main chakra, we call the Solar Plexus. I always refer to it as our "powerhouse". This is where we feel fierce when we are motivated. We find our personal power in making choices, our sense of freedom and we allow ourselves to stand out. When we are at our healthiest both physically and spiritually, our solar plexus is where we turn our dreams into reality!

The original name for this chakra in Sanskrit is Manipura: "place of gems" or "lustrous gem"*. Our Solar Plexus is located between our navel and the bottom of our sternum. It governs our digestive system, pancreas, liver, spleen and gallbladder. Its associated with our sense of sight. When we are at our best, meaning that the prana is flowing through our solar plexus and is balanced, we

  • have the self-confidence to achieve goals without bulllying or arrogance

  • are self motivated and look forward to challenges

  • have a healthy self esteem where we comfortable with who we are and are accepting others

  • are reliable and responsible

When our prana, that vital life force, is not flowing through our solar plexus, because either there is too much (stagnant) or too little (blocked), we can be affected physically and emotionally in the following ways:

  • food allergies

  • diabetes

  • stomach and digestive problems

  • obesity and overeating

  • stress related acne

  • memory problems

  • apathy

  • inability to enjoy life's pleasures

  • constant worrying and insecurity

  • feelings of dread

  • inability to relax

  • feelings of anger

  • aggression - overbearing personality that tends to be "a bully"

  • fatigue

Individuals who have suffered trauma from toxic upbringing, bullying, assault or PTSD will have more of a challenge in balancing their Solar Plexus. Therapy, surrounding yourself with supportive people, and finding activities to promote a healthy lifestyle will help heal past traumas. Finding a path to wellness is a journey and there are many things we can do to balance our third chakra.

So, how we take care of our third chakra? Keep in mind that we just don't focus on one chakra. We have to start from the root and work up (see previous blog posts on Chakras: Self Awareness, Health and Wellbeing, To be Grounded, Sacral Chakra).

Our solar plexus is associated with the colour yellow. Working with yellow and wearing yellow is a wonderful way to honour our Solar Plexus as is participating in competitive sports or setting fitness goals to challenge yourself such as working towards running a 5km race.

What do I need to know about making good choices for my life?

There are external factors and forces influencing your success and failure that you cannot control, but they should not hold you back. The right timing is hard to predict so make sure you understand your goals and desires so you can focus on them when the unexpected happens. It's easy to get upset when something throws us off our path. So just continue on with your goal. Also, pay attention to old habits that are stopping you from making the necessary changes to accomplish your goals. You tend to hold on to the stressful thought of failure and have "negative chatter" in your mind. Find a way to release those thoughts. It will help if you surround yourself with people who are optimistic and encouraging because right now you are doubting yourself. Do not leave yourself vulnerable to those who do not want you to succeed. Keep telling yourself that you deserve success. You deserve to do what you love. You are not to be afraid of naysayers.
